Why Did We Flood?

mftoder

The Sarasota Citizens Action Network (SCAN) of which SEERD is a member hosted at its October meeting last week a presentation by Steve Suau, a retired engineer who previously worked on storm water management for Sarasota County. His findings are based on his independent investigation and assessment of why the Philippi Creek watershed in Sarasota County experienced such extensive flooding during and just after Hurricane Debby earlier this year.

Steve went over the history of storm water management and previous storms that caused flooding in the county, explained the systems in place and infrastructure intended to mitigate the impact of these extreme rain events. He also identified the likely structural and organizational weaknesses that resulted in so much damage and dislocation experienced by county residents and what could be done to remedy this situation.

He offered some sensible recommendations for change and improvement for all of us to consider. This will require urgent action and leadership on the part of our county representatives. To read a more detailed summary of his presentation and watch the recording of last night's well attended meeting, please use the link provided by SCAN below.

If you have any questions or suggestions for taking the work that Steve has done forward and preventing future recurrences of life altering floods, please let us know. Your comments and suggestions will be helpful as SEERD plans its future activities to protect our property, lifestyle and lives in the Bee Ridge neighborhood.
